Inspiration
The San Antonio River Authority's 2024 Fiesta Medal commemorates Freshwater Mussels in the San Antonio River. The medal depicts a native freshwater mussel known as the “Yellow Sandshell”. Freshwater Mussels provide many ecological benefits to our river such as cleaning the water and giving stability to the river's bed. Since 2017, River Authority Scientists have carefully been working to reintroduce freshwater mussels back into our river which will finally happen this spring, The first mussel reintroduction in Texas!
